Morocco and US Finalize Preparations for 2023 African Lion Military Exercise

The final planning meeting of the 2023 African Lion—the largest military exercise on the continent—was held at the military headquarters of the General Staff of the South Zone in Morocco’s Agadir from April 12 to 16.

Representatives from Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and the United States Armed Forces met to finalize preparations for the various activities scheduled as part of the 19th edition of the African Lion military training, according to a statement from the FAR General Staff.

The 19th edition of this major event will see the participation of nearly 6,000 soldiers from twenty African and international countries, including Morocco and the U.S., as well as 27 observer countries.

The joint operations and maneuvers, carried out jointly by the FAR and partner nations, in a variety of operational domains, including land, air, sea, and CBRN decontamination aim to strengthen “capacity-building intervention in a global setting,” added the statement.

This year’s edition will feature a musical show that will be held on the sidelines of the military exercise, featuring the FAR and the 23rd Utah State Army bands.

According to the statement, the joint musical performance is part of the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of bilateral cooperation between Morocco’s FAR and the Utah State National Guard.
