Morocco, Israel To Prepare Joint Film Productions

Rabat – Representatives from the Dakhla Film Commission and the Rabat International Author Film Festival met this week with delegates from the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sports as part of the 76th Cannes Film Festival to discuss potential collaboration in the film industry.

In a joint effort to promote collaboration, the parties agreed to facilitate exchanges of visits and experience in the film domain, according to a statement from the Dakhla Film Commission

Additionally, they resolved to establish co-productions of films, strengthen cooperation in training initiatives, and encourage joint participation in film festivals.

A future visit by an Israeli film delegation to Morocco was also confirmed, with a primary focus on producing joint film projects that highlight the Jewish cultural heritage of Morocco.

The Israeli delegation featured Director of the Department of Cinema at the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sports Karen Carmel, Director of Culture Kalit Wahba Chachou and Artistic Director Osnat Bukofzer.

The meeting highlighted Morocco’s popularity as a sought-after film destination, thanks to its impressive film infrastructure, including the renowned Atlas Film Studios, known for hosting major productions like “The Mummy(1999),” “Gladiator” (2000), and “Kingdom of Heaven” (2005).

Morocco’s acclaim as a filming location was further reinforced in April 2022, when it was recognized as one of the top ten destinations for filmmakers globally.

Since the re-establishment of diplomatic relations in late 2020, Morocco and Israel have expressed a keen interest in expanding their cooperation across various sectors, including trade, tourism, defense, education, and training.

The two countries’s bilateral trade figures reflect this growing collaboration. Data from the Israel Bureau of Statistics highlighted that trade between the two countries saw an increase of 626.32% compared to the same period last year, reaching $13.8 million in January 2023.

As the partnership between Morocco and Israel continues to strengthen across diverse sectors, plans are underway for Israel to establish a trade mission in Morocco later this year.
