Russian UN ambassador emphasizes Libya’s stability for North Africa’s development

Russia’s UN ambassador Vasily Alekseyevich Nebenzya expressed his country’s keen interest in closely monitoring the situation in Libya. He emphasized that stability and security were crucial not just for the people of Libya but for the development of North Africa as a whole.

In a session on Libya in the Security Council, the Russian delegate highlighted that sustainable settlement in Libya could only be achieved through a controlled political process, “which must be developed and determined by the Libyan people themselves without external interference.” According to him, the cornerstone of this process was the upcoming elections.

He expressed his hope that the High Council of State and the House of Representatives would finalize the legal foundations required to conduct the elections before June this year. Welcoming the formation of a joint committee from the Council “6+6” and adoption of a new version of the Constitutional Declaration, the representative of Russia underscored the importance of all political forces participating without discrimination, including representative of the previous government.

The Russian representative urged the Libyan parties to be flexible and prepared to reach a reasonable agreement of opinions. He considered this as a crucial step for the successful conduct of elections in Libya, which would bring much-needed stability and security to the country and the North African region at large.
