Rabat – FIFA’s Referee Committee has revealed the list of the match officials appointed to officiate at the Under-20 World Cup matches.
FIFA has selected 18 Video Match Officials, including Moroccan Hamza El Fariq, as well as 38 Assistant referees, featuring Moroccan Zakaria Brinsi. Meanwhile, international football’s governing body has selected a total of 25 referees for the tournament.
The sporting event will take place between May 20 and June 11 in Argentina, with the participation of 24 teams, including Senegal, Fiji, Iraq, Brazil, and Japan, among others. The U-20 draw is taking place later today in Zurich, Switzerland.
“It is a particular joy to be able to hold the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina,” said Chairman of FIFA’s Referee Committee Pierluigi Collina, underlining that the Latin American country will be “a great venue for this important competition which is the beginning of a new cycle leading to the FIFA World Cup 2026.”
FIFA has selected some of the top match officials from across the world for the youth competition, said FIFA’s Director of Refereeing Massimo Busacca.
The FIFA Refereeing Subdivision will supervise the officials’ preparations for the youth competition. Their training will cover a wide range of topics, including their “ability to comprehend and interpret the game, collaboration, and the significance of being in the appropriate position or angle to make the accurate decision,” indicated FIFA in a press release.
“All these aspects reflect the FIFA Refereeing philosophy and are key to the officials’ performance, and as such, are vital to achieve consistency and uniformity at such a high level of the game,” Busacca added.
Few days ahead of the tournament’s kick off, the appointed match officials will participate in a final preparation seminar to review and analyze videos of real-match situations.
